Munich

Munich is our home, and as you’ll see, it feels more like a big village than a city. With its abundance of beautiful architecture, 🌳 green spaces, and rich history, it has something for everyone. Below are our recommendations for travel, accommodation, food, and attractions.

Munich

✈️ How to get here?

  • ✈️ By plane:
Fly into Munich Airport (MUC) – the easiest option for anyone joining from abroad.

  • πŸš† By train:
Convenient connections from mainland Europe. Check the DB website.

  • 🚫 By car:
You can drive here if you want, but we strongly advise against trying to get around the city by car. If you have specific plans outside the city or want to use the car to drive down to Linescio for the wedding party, let us know and we can provide some tips.

Public transit in and around Munich is comfortable, safe, inexpensive, and much faster than driving.

πŸ›οΈ Where to stay?

If you want to join us for some pre-wedding festivities, here are some hotel recommendations. Luxury isn’t really our thing, so these picks are relayed through others.

🎑 What to do?

Here are some of our favorite things to do in and around the city:

  • 🌳 Englischer Garten:
One of the largest urban parks in the world, perfect for a stroll or beer by the river.

  • πŸ• Dachau:
A sobering but important visit to the Dachau Memorial Site.

  • πŸ§–β€β™€οΈ Erdinger Therme:
Relax at this spa and thermal bath, just outside the city.

  • 🍺 Biergartens:
Enjoy Munich’s famous beer gardens. Our favorites are:

    • Zum Flaucher - small and hidden in the forest, reachable by bike and foot only.
    • Augustiner Keller - large, traditional, great beer and easy to reach.
    • Max Emmanuel - small family run place with good food in the heart of Schwabing.
  • πŸ›οΈ Museums:
Munich has some really cool museums. A few highlights:

    • Deutsches Museum - science and technology
    • Pinakotheken - world-class art galleries
    • Museum Brandhorst - modern art
    • Haus der Kunst - modern art
  • 🎭 Residenztheater:
Opera, ballet, and theater. This is Munich’s biggest, but there are many more. If you’re interested, reach out to us for more tips.

  • 🏞️ Starnberger See:
A beautiful lake just south of Munich, perfect for swimming, hiking, or enjoying the view. Easily reachable by public transport.

  • 🍻 Breweries:
As you likely know, we love beer. If you do too, we encourage you to go off the beaten path of Munich’s main breweries a bit and explore some smaller, lesser-known places:

    • Ayinger - Traditional Bavarian beers in a small village. Beautiful place, great food and great beers. 45 mins from the city by public transit or a scenic 26 km bike ride.
    • Giesinger - The alternative hip one among Munich’s traditional breweries.
    • True Brew - One of Munich’s best craft breweries

πŸ’‘ Other tips

  • πŸ“± Public transit:
Download the public transit app for Munich: MVGO. It’s your go-to for trams, buses, U-Bahn, and S-Bahn schedules.

Tip: Group day tickets (2-5 people) are often cheaper than individual tickets.

  • 🏷️ Munich Card / City Pass:
If you plan to visit multiple museums or attractions, consider the Munich City Pass or Munich Card. Both include public transport and discounts.

  • 🚲 Rent a bike:
Munich is super bike-friendly. Bikes can be rented through the MVGO app.

  • πŸ’Ά Cash is king (yes, still…):
Many smaller places, like beer gardens and bakeries, only accept cash. ATMs are easy to find, so it’s good to keep some Euros on hand.

  • 🌦️ Pack for the weather:
Munich weather can be unpredictable! Bring layers, a light rain jacket, or a small umbrella, just in case.

  • πŸ›οΈ Sunday closures:
Most stores, including supermarkets, are closed on Sundays. Plan ahead for snacks, essentials, or shopping.
